Over the last few years we have seen plenty of evidence of hedgehogs scurrying around the Pockthorpe neighbourhood. They have been spotted on Dibden Road near the old Shoe Factory, on Balfour street near Ketts. On Morley Street around the passageways and in many other places too!

Whilst I was leafleting only last week my friend and I saw a hedgehog on Romany Road trying to access a garden.

Where hedgehogs struggle is due to the progressive loss of their habitats out in more rural settings. Funnily enough, as their habitat in rural areas has become more threatened due to aggressive farming and reduced hedgerows, they have encroached more and more into urban areas and urban gardens and green spaces have become more and more vital.

What’s great is that there are many green spaces in our area for these threatened species right here on our doorstep and we would love to see them thrive here in Pockthorpe. However green spaces are often partitioned and difficult to access in many cases.

During lockdown Lizzie and I made hedgehog houses to put in our back gardens and we have opened up our gardens and back passageways to allow for hedgehogs to roam. Wouldn’t it be great if they could travel freely through gardens and the same for other wildlife species?

We noticed particularly during recent winter months that animals were having to travel further and along roads due to fences blocking green spaces where potentially there are numerous hazards.

In Morley street and Ketts Cave and Sandy Park we would like to enhance the nature highways from high ground right down to the river and open up nature access routes where we can. Lizzie has been busy opening up little hedgehog holes under some of these fences so that hedgehogs can get to hibernation and food sites.

The Pockthorpe community group aim to improve wildlife corridors so that we can better understand and live in harmony with wildlife.

It would be great if we could start to open up more areas for our hedgehogs and other city-dwelling animals.
